What is the Intent?

We are coming up to the last session of our Toes to Bar skill focus block, designed to allow consistent focused practice to maximise progress. This is the first of many different skill focus blocks, which we believe to be an incredibly useful way to provide opportunities for skill practice outside of the metcon or conditioning piece.

As the coach explains the intent of the session it should give you some insight into what the focus and desired training stimulus is. It may be a skill focused session or segment, it may be simply training, or even testing. Why is this useful for you?

It allows you to choose options for the training session of the day that are going to best provide you with opportunities for progress and development. If the day is technique based, you want to choose an option that allows you to focus on aspects of that skill that you find challenging, broken down into manageable parts that when put back together will strengthen the β€˜whole’ movement.

When it comes to the metcon, we want to choose options that will achieve the stimulus of the conditioning piece. For most, it will be options that allow continuous movement so that we can build on our capacity in conditioning work. Metcons are generally not the best time to practice a skill that you are inconsistent with, as it then loses the desired training effect when excessive rest is required or movement starts to break down. Not only does it mean that you start to ingrain poor movement patterns, but you also set yourself up for higher risk of injury.

Our coaches can provide useful advice for choosing the options that are best suited to your abilities and focuses, do be sure to seek them out for advice when needed!

Our next skill focus block is kipping pullups. Hopefully this article has provided some insight into how to best use this focus block to your advantage :)

Happy training team!
